3. Outreach actities
Science education and practical training of students from High Schools.
Since 2018, my group participates together with "Fundación Joven" in the development of STEM education at High Schools from Ñuñoa, in our case especifically of the school Toribio Medina. We support the development of a scientific or engeneering projects for students from the 14-17 years, that includes visiting the students at school and a visit of our laboratory. We reforced their own scientific projects with education of the specific aim of our laboratory (viral infections). This later topic helped at the same time to reforze also sexual education, in order to avoid transmission of HIV that has been increasing during the last years in Chile.

Since the year 2015, our laboratory receives every year around 3 students from a High School in Santiago (Colegio Suizo de Santiago) who are interested in studying a subject of Natural Sciences. The practical training takes an entire week in our laboratory, during which the students perform experiments to amplify and isolate genes and prepare transgenic organisms, expressing viral antigens. During the entire week strong emphasis is given to teach them the goals of our studies and to guide them in finding their own interests in natural sciences in a wider context.
