Methodology to Design Product-Service System Contracts for Mining Components

Abstract

This paper proposes a methodology based in channel coordination and component reliability for the optimal design of use oriented Product-Service Systems (PSS) for mining components. The methodology is developed for non-repairable components which represent an important amount of the operational cost of a mine. They also represent a challenge in the development of PSS contract as their expected life depends more of the operational conditions than of the maintenance policies that they receive. In a PSS contract instead of paying for the product the client pays a fee for a service that embeds its use. A PSS requires an alignment in the interest of the client and the supplier to guarantee a win-win situation. In order to achieve the desired alignment a cooperative relationship must be assured through effective channel coordination. We present a contribution to the existing literature by providing a quantitative tool for the development of a PSS contract that can be extended to other performance metrics such as availability and reliability. In our work channel coordination is achieved by balancing the normalized cost for the client and the profit for the supplier. We illustrate our methodology using a case study that analyses mining haul-truck tires. The results show a significant overall improvement in the profit and environmental impact of the business chain.
